Mitsutaro Shirai

Botanist. Born in Fukui City. After attending the Tokyo English School and the Tokyo University Preparatory School, he graduated from the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Tokyo in 1886 (Meiji 19). He was the second to graduate from the department after Saida Kotaro (1859-1924), and his graduation thesis research on mosses in Tokyo and its surrounding areas is considered the beginning of academic research on mosses in Japan. He later studied plant pathology in Germany. In 1907, he became a professor at the College of Agriculture, Tokyo Imperial University. He retired in 1925 (Taisho 14). He researched glutinous disease and witches' broom, and wrote "Plant Pathology" (1903). He contributed greatly to the development of forest botany, and was also deeply knowledgeable in the study of plant deformities and pharmacopoeia, and published works including "Thoughts on the Mysterious Nature of Plants" (1925), "Thoughts on the Arrival of Plants" (1929), and "Chronology of Japanese Botany" (1891).

植物学者。福井市生まれ。東京英語学校、東京大学予備門を経て、1886年(明治19)東京大学理学部植物学科を卒業。斎田功太郎(1859―1924)に次ぐ二人目の同学科卒業生であり、卒業論文での東京とその周辺の蘚(せん)類の研究は、日本における蘚類の学術的研究の始まりとみなされる。その後、ドイツに留学して植物病理学を研究。1907年東京帝国大学農科大学教授となる。1925年(大正14)退官。もち病、てんぐ巣病の研究を手がけ、『植物病理学』(1903)を著した。森林植物学の開拓に貢献し、また植物の奇形の研究、本草(ほんぞう)学にも造詣(ぞうけい)が深く、『植物妖異(ようい)考』(1925)、『植物渡来考』(1929)、『日本植物学年表』(1891)の著作がある。
