An evergreen shrub of the Rubiaceae family native to Okinawa and Taiwan, growing 1-2m in height. The leaves grow opposite each other. The flowers are small, yellow, tubular and divided into five parts. The white calyx bracts are well developed and look beautifully petal-like. The Mussaenda genus has about 60 species distributed throughout Asia, tropical Africa, and the Pacific Islands. In tropical regions, it is often used as a garden tree because of its beautiful petal-like calyx bracts. M. erythrophylla Schum.et Thonn.
