Producing artistic crafts using traditional techniques. Most of them are small-scale works made by skilled workers (craftsmen) using simple tools and machines. Typical examples are pottery such as Kiyomizu-yaki and Kutani-yaki, and textile products such as Yuzen-zome. Some traditional crafts decline due to a lack of successors and competition with similar products mass-produced in factories. In Japan, the Traditional Crafts Industry Promotion Act was enacted in 1974 with the aim of nurturing and promoting local industries based on traditional techniques.
