Year of death: 1st April, 3rd year of Shōtai (2nd May, 900) Year of birth: Tencho 10 (833) A consort in the early Heian period. Empress Dowager and Empress Dowager of Toin. Her father was Prince Nakano and her mother was from the Tonomune clan. She became the wife before Prince Tokiyasu (Emperor Koko) ascended to the throne, and gave birth to four sons and four daughters, including Prince Sadamori (Emperor Uda) and Princess Tameshi. In 884 (Gangei 8), she became a Junior Third Rank consort when Koko ascended to the throne. In 887 (Ninna 3), after Koko's death and Emperor Uda ascended to the throne, she became Crown Princess, and when Emperor Daigo ascended to the throne, she became Empress Dowager. In 897 (Kanpei 9), she ordered Emperor Uda to stop the plot by Fujiwara no Tokihira to have his daughter Princess Tameshi enter the court of Emperor Daigo, who ascended to the throne at the same time as his coming-of-age ceremony, and to have his younger sister Onshi enter the court. When Princess Tameko died after giving birth in 899, rumors spread that she had died because of the vengeful spirit of Onshi's mother, and the Empress Dowager became increasingly displeased and continued to refuse Onshi's entry into the Imperial Court. Onshi was finally allowed to enter the Imperial Court after the death of Princess Hanshi. This shows that the Queen Mother had a great influence. She built Yamashiro Jofukuji Temple. There is also a theory that she was born in 853 (Jinju 3). (Sanae Hattori) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc. About Asahi Japanese Historical Biography |
