...When these five antigens are examined, there are more than 18 types, which provide very useful information on genetics. However, when examining Rh blood type for clinical medical purposes such as blood transfusion, it is customary to first examine only the D antigen (see "Blood Types and Transfusions" below for the reason). By examining the D antigen, it is possible to distinguish between two types, Rh+ (positive, D+ type) and Rh- (negative, D- type). The frequency of Rh+ and Rh- varies by race and ethnicity, with 15-20% of whites and 3-10% of blacks being Rh-, while on average only 0.5% (about 1 in 200 people) of Japanese people are Rh- (however, in Okinawa, it is high at about 1%). ...
