Local assembly member

Japanese: 地方議員 - ちほうぎいん

Members of local government assemblies. All members of ordinary local government assemblies (prefectural assembly members, city/town assembly members) and special ward assemblies are directly elected, and serve a four-year term. The number of assembly members is limited by population level under the Local Autonomy Act, and is set by ordinance within that range. Local assembly elections are subject to strict regulations on eligibility to run, campaign funds, election activities, etc. under the Public Offices Election Act. Candidates for mayor only need to be eligible to be elected, but local assembly members must be residents of the local government.

地方公共団体の議会の議員。普通地方公共団体議会の議員(都道府県会議員，市町村会議員)と特別区議会の議員はすべて直接公選であり，任期は4年である。議員定数は人口段階別に地方自治法に定限が定められ，その範囲内において条例で定められている。地方議員選挙には公職選挙法に基づき立候補資格，選挙資金，選挙活動などについて厳しい規制が加えられる。首長立候補者は被選挙権をもてばよいが，地方議員は当該自治体に居住する者でなくてはならない。
