Eude(s) (English spelling) Eude

[Establishment and power base]
Before their accession, the House of Capetians had a history dating back to Robert le Fort (?-866), a nobleman from northern France who had migrated from the Rhine region. The second Count of Paris, Eude(s), fought against the Normans to defend Paris and became king of West Frankish France. Eude's reign (888-898) marked the beginning of a new era in two senses: the decline of the Carolingian monarchy and the establishment of a fiefdom (principauté).

From the Carolingian period

... The Frankish kingdom itself was temporarily unified under Charles III (reigned 881-887), but this emperor failed in his measures against the Normans. Meanwhile, in West Francia, Eudes (reigned 887-897) of the House of Robert (later the House of Capet), who had distinguished himself in the Norman siege of Paris (885-886), and Raoul of Burgundy (reigned 923-936) were elected kings, and the principle of the monopoly of the throne by this dynasty was soon broken, and the Carolingian dynasty came to an end with the accession of Hugh Capet (987). In East Francia, the rise of the House of Saxony in 911 marked the end of this line of kings and emperors. ...

From the House of Robert

…He was killed in battle at Brissarte in 866, leaving two sons, Eude and Robert I. Count Eude, who made a name for himself by defending Paris from the Normans in 885-886, was recommended by the leading nobles to become king after the dethronement of Charles III in 887, and the Carolingian system was effectively ended. After Eude's death in 898, royal power returned to the Carolingians, but in 922, Margrave Robert I, who led a rebellion against Charles III the Simple, was elected king, but he died after only one year in reign, and his son-in-law Raoul, Duke of Burgundy (reigned 923-936), succeeded him to the throne. …
