An industrial city in the southern part of South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, and the provincial capital. It used to be a grain-producing area adjacent to Masan City, but since construction of the largest public industrial complex in South Korea, the Changwon Machinery Industrial Base, began in 1973, it has developed remarkably. The 23km2 industrial complex is home to Korea Heavy Industries and other leading machine factories, as well as a large number of subcontracting factories. It is a base region that will carry the future of South Korea's manufacturing industry.
