Reverse detection

Japanese: 逆探知 - ぎゃくたんち

To trace a telephone or telegraph communication back to its source. This is often used by investigative agencies, with the cooperation of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), to track down the source of a call from a criminal in cases of kidnapping for ransom, blackmail, or intimidation. Even if the receiving party consents, this is problematic in terms of the secrecy of communications and the protection of privacy. Some say that in such cases, the sender has no right to demand secrecy or privacy, while others say that it is permissible as a kind of self-defense.
