In modern Anglo-American property law, it refers to the individual ownership of one dwelling unit in an apartment building. In this case, ownership of the land and other structural parts of the building shared with the other dwelling unit owners is indivisible. Cooperative ownership, as a form of co-operative ownership, has existed in Europe in various forms since the late Middle Ages. In America, co-operative ownership emerged in the second half of the 19th century and was widespread in densely populated urban areas where it was practically difficult for individuals to own homes independently.
