Japanese: 撰善言司 - せんぜんげんし

In ancient Japan, this was an office that collected the good words of our forefathers and compiled a moral history book. It was established in June 689 (the third year of the reign of Jitō) with the appointment of Prince Shiki and seven other talented officials. Modelled on the 30-volume Kokin Zengen written by Fan Tai of the Southern Song Dynasty, the office aimed to compile a book that would be useful for the education of the children of the imperial family and aristocrats, including the emperor's grandson Prince Karu (later Emperor Mommu), but was never completed and the office was dissolved. However, there is evidence that the manuscript was used when compiling the Nihon Shoki. [Aoki Kazuo]

日本古代に，先人の善言を集めて教訓的歴史書を撰上しようとした官司。689年(持統3)6月，施基（しき）皇子以下7人の文才ある官人を任命して発足。南朝の宋の范泰が著した《古今善言》30巻にならい，皇孫の軽皇子(後の文武天皇)ら皇族や貴族の子弟の修養に役だつ書物を編集しようとしたが，完成しえずに解散。しかしその稿本は《日本書紀》編集のさいに利用された形跡がある。【青木和夫】
