A group of Spanish islands in the western Mediterranean Sea, east of the Iberian Peninsula. The islands include Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, and form the Balearic Autonomous Community. The region has a Mediterranean climate, and olive and fruit cultivation is thriving. Industries include textiles, leather, and food processing. The capital of the Balearic Autonomous Community is Palma de Mallorca on the island of Mallorca. Total area is 4,992 ^km2 . Population: 1,105,030 (2011).
