Tanna Basin

Japanese: 丹那盆地 - たんなぼんち
Tanna Basin
A small basin on the western slope of Taga Volcano, at the base of the Izu Peninsula in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. It is 235m above sea level and is almost circular. Small basins such as Karuizawa and Tashiro are connected to it. The floor of the basin is said to have once been a lake, and Jindai cedars are buried there. Rice fields have been opened up, and dairy farming is carried out on the surrounding slopes. During the 1930 North Izu earthquake, the eastern side of the fault moved horizontally 2.6m north, and the fault that appeared within the basin has been designated a natural monument. The JR Tokaido Main Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen run through tunnels under the basin.
