170 BCE - 133 BCE King of Pergamum. Reigned 138-133 BC. Son of Eumenes II. Succeeded Attalus II. He showed no enthusiasm for state affairs, instead devoting himself to studying poisonous plants, even writing a book about them. His will led to the kingdom of Pergamum being donated to Rome. His motives are unclear. However, his brother Aristonicus claimed the throne, gathered allies, mainly consisting of the lower classes and slaves, and fought against Rome, but was defeated (Aristonicus' Revolt). In 129 BC, the Roman province of Asia was founded here. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
