Takanawa

This area is located in the southeastern part of Minato Ward, Tokyo. Formerly written as Takanawa, the road along the Yamanote Plateau was called Takanawate-do (a straight road on high ground), hence the name. At the southeastern end is Shinagawa Station, which is served by JR and Keikyu Corporation, and the Toei Subway Asakusa Line, Mita Line, and Tokyo Metro Namboku Line. There are many temples on the plateau, including Sengaku-ji Temple (the grave of the Ako Gishi) and Tozen-ji Temple (where the first British Embassy was located). During the Edo period, there were many secondary residences of feudal lords, one of which became the residence of Prince Takeda, which is now the guest house of the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa. In 2-chome, there is the site of Takanawa Okido (a national historic site), which was the Edo entrance to the Tokaido. It is known as one of the upscale residential areas.

東京都港区南東部にある地区。かつて高縄と記し、山手(やまのて)台地沿いの道を高縄手道（高台にあるまっすぐな道）とよんだことが地名の由来。南東端にJR、京浜急行電鉄の品川駅があり、都営地下鉄浅草線・三田線、東京地下鉄南北線が通る。台地には泉岳寺(せんがくじ)（赤穂(あこう)義士墓所）、東禅寺(とうぜんじ)（最初のイギリス公使館が置かれた）をはじめ多くの寺院がある。江戸時代は大名の中屋敷も多く、その一つが竹田宮(たけだのみや)邸となり、邸宅は現在はグランドプリンスホテル高輪の貴賓館。2丁目に東海道の江戸の出入口の高輪大木戸跡（国史跡）がある。高級住宅地の一つとして知られる。
