…Monks who adopted strange and unreasonable lifestyles or pretended to be insane for the love of Christ, called saloi in Greek, appeared in large numbers in the East, especially in Syria. Representative figures include the 6th-century Egyptian hermit Symeōn Salos, and the 10th-century Scythian Andreas Salos of Constantinople, famous for the legend that the Virgin Mary appeared to him while he was praying. In addition, Christians had a custom of showing sympathy and respect to the mentally retarded and insane, regarding them as messengers of God, and so it was possible for such monks to live a life of wandering from place to place. …
