Eclipsing variable star

Japanese: 食変光星 - しょくへんこうせい

Also known as an eclipsing binary. A binary system consisting of two fixed stars, with the orbital plane facing the Earth, causes alternating eclipses of the bright primary star and the fainter companion star, causing periodic changes in brightness. When the primary star is hidden (primary eclipse), the brightness reaches its first minimum, and when the companion star is hidden, it reaches its second minimum, but the change in brightness varies depending on the size of the two stars, their mutual distance, and their orbital inclination. They can also be classified as Algol type variables, which normally have a constant brightness and dim intermittently, or as Beta Lyrae type variables, whose brightness changes constantly throughout the entire cycle.

食連星とも。２個の恒星からなる連星の公転面が地球へ向いているため，明るい主星と暗い伴星が交互に食を起こし，光度が周期的に変わるもの。主星が隠れる（主食）とき光度は第１極小，伴星が隠れるとき第２極小になるが，光度の変化は両星の大きさ，相互距離，軌道傾斜によって種々異なる。平常は一定光度で間欠的に減光するアルゴル型変光星，全周期中絶えず光度が変化すること座β型変光星などに分けることもある。
