A small, biennial rosette plant of the Aesculus genus in the family Primulaceae (illustration). Also known as moss primrose. Widely distributed in Southeast Asia, and common in Okinawa, Japan. It grows in grasslands and develops leaves in a rosette shape. It has a petiole and the leaf blade is oval, 5-15 mm long and wide, with triangular blunt teeth on the edge and a shallow heart or wedge-shaped base. In April and May, it grows an upright flower stalk 5-15 cm tall, and bears 1-10 flowers in an umbel at the top. The pedicel is thin, 1-5 cm long, and has bracts at the base. サクラソウ科トチナイソウ属の小型の一,二年生のロゼット植物(イラスト)。コケサクラソウともいう。東南アジアに広く分布し,日本では沖縄に多い。草地にはえ,葉をロゼット状に展開する。葉柄があり,葉身は卵円形で長さ幅とも5~15mm,縁に三角形の鈍牙歯があり,基部は浅い心臓形またはくさび形。4~5月に,直立した高さ5~15cmの花茎を伸ばし,頂の散形花序に1~10花をつける。小花柄は細く,長さ1~5cm,基部に苞葉がある。
