Ginzo Uchida
Year of death: July 20, 1919
Year of birth: January 25, 1872 (March 4, 1872)
Historian of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Doctor of Literature. Born into a river fish wholesaler in Nakagumi, Senju-cho, Minami-Adachi-gun, Tokyo Prefecture. Graduated from Imperial University in 1896. Became a lecturer at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University in 1909 and studied abroad in Europe. Became a professor at Kyoto Imperial University in 1916, where he participated in the establishment of the History Department and made efforts to set up the National History Course and research lab, and then participated in the management of the History Research Society and the library. Aiming to break away from the historical research of Tokyo Imperial University, he opened up new ground in historical theory and historical philosophy, and established early modern Japanese history as a field of study. His academic style was strong, and he was particularly skilled in Japanese economic history, providing an overview of the land system and the transition of economic development from a global historical perspective, which had the potential to develop into cultural history. In 1918, he went on a business trip to the United States and Europe, and died shortly after returning to Japan. He was a strict, sincere, cautious, refined, and strict person who strived for self-cultivation and was of high integrity. His grave is at Seiryoji Temple in Ayase, Adachi Ward, Tokyo. <Works> "Complete Works of Ginzo Uchida," "Early Modern Japan" and "History of Early Modern Japan," edited and annotated by Michio Miyazaki. <References> "50 Years of the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University"
