Phylum Cnidaria, Class Hydrozoa, Order Leptothecata, Family Acanthaceae. Twigs grow alternately from a single trunk attached to a rock, forming a feathery colony about 4cm high. The colony is yellowish brown, and the upper side of the twigs is densely lined with cup-shaped hydropods, each of which has three small teeth (stinging capsules). The reproductive organs are completely enclosed in a large basket-like structure formed by the transformation of a dozen or so twigs. It is found on the seabed at depths of several meters along the coasts south of central Honshu. 刺胞動物門ヒドロ虫綱レプトテカータ目アカガヤ科。岩石上に付着した 1本の幹から小枝を左右交互に出して,高さ 4cmほどの羽状の群体をつくる。群体は黄褐色で,小枝の上側にはコップ状のヒドロ莢がびっしりと並んでおり,ヒドロ莢の縁には小さな歯(刺莢)が 3個ずつある。生殖体は,十数本の小枝が変形してできた大きなかご状のものの中に完全に包み込まれている。本州中部以南の沿岸の水深数mの海底に産する。(→刺胞動物,ヒドロ虫類,無脊椎動物)
