A perennial plant of the family Celastraceae that grows in shallow tropical ponds and marshes (illustration). Runners emerge from the base of the plant. The leaves are basal, have petioles, and stand at an angle above the water surface. The petioles are 20-60 cm long and triangular in cross section. The leaf blades are broadly elliptical, 10-20 cm long and 6-15 cm wide, with pointed tips. In the tropics, the plant blooms all year round. The flower stalks are 20-80 cm long and triangular in cross section, and bear umbel-shaped cymes of about 10 flowers at the end. There are several ovate bracts at the base of the inflorescence.
