…American politician. Born in Virginia. Served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1823 to 1827, and was governor of Tennessee from 1827 to 1829. From 1835 onwards, he led the American-Texas army, which aimed for independence from Mexico. In April 1836, he captured Mexican dictator General Santa Anna and forced Texas to recognize its independence. In the same year, he was elected as the first president of the Republic of Texas, and although he lost in 1838, he was re-elected in 1841.
