…The river was originally the Dongjiang River, one of the three rivers described in the ancient geographical book Yu Gong, and as a result of successive flood control works, it took on its current course. In particular, the lower reaches of the Huangpu River were created under the plan of Xia Yuanji during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1403-24). The Huangpu River was a major factor in Shanghai becoming the nation's leading city in terms of industry and trade in modern times.
