Also known as Saranoki or Sharanoki. A deciduous tall tree of the Dipterocarpaceae family native to the highlands of India. It usually grows in pure forests. The leaves are oval and thin and leathery, and the flowers are pale yellow with five petals and about 3 cm in diameter. The wood is hard and is used as building material. In Buddhism, it is considered a sacred tree along with the legend of the death of Shakyamuni. Incidentally, the tree planted as Saranoki in Japanese temples is actually Camellia japonica, a member of the Theaceae family. →Related topics: Japanese holly | Japanese holly Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
