Japanese: サラソウジュ(沙羅双樹) - サラソウジュ

Also known as Saranoki or Sharanoki. A deciduous tall tree of the Dipterocarpaceae family native to the highlands of India. It usually grows in pure forests. The leaves are oval and thin and leathery, and the flowers are pale yellow with five petals and about 3 cm in diameter. The wood is hard and is used as building material. In Buddhism, it is considered a sacred tree along with the legend of the death of Shakyamuni. Incidentally, the tree planted as Saranoki in Japanese temples is actually Camellia japonica, a member of the Theaceae family.

サラノキ，シャラノキとも。インドの高地に自生するフタバガキ科の落葉高木。ふつう純林をなして生育。葉は楕円形で薄く革質，花は淡黄色５弁で径約3cm。材は硬く，建材などとされる。仏教では釈迦入滅時の伝説とともに聖樹とされる。なお，日本の寺院などでサラノキといって植えられているのはツバキ科のナツツバキである。
