Photographic film is made by coating a thin film base (support) made of cellulose derivatives or similar material with a photosensitive photographic emulsion. The surface is protected by a gelatin membrane or similar, and to prevent halation, gelatin mixed with light-absorbing dyes is coated on the back, or these dyes are added to the film base. There are various types of film, such as orthopan and panchromatic, based on differences in photosensitivity, and various types of film, such as still photography film, movie film, X-ray film, and microfilm, based on their uses. 写真フィルムは，セルロース誘導体などの薄いフィルムベース（支持体）に感光剤である写真乳剤を塗ったもの。表面はゼラチン膜などで保護され，ハレーション防止のため裏面に光を吸収する色素を混ぜたゼラチンを塗布したり，フィルムベースにこれらの色素を加えたりする。感光特性の違いにより，オルソパン，パンクロなどの種類があり，用途によりスチル写真用フィルム，映画用フィルム，Ｘ線フィルム，マイクロフィルムなど各種ある。またその形態からは，35mmフィルムやブローニーフィルムなどのような８〜70mmの幅をもつロールフィルムと，４×５フィルム，８×10フィルムなどのような一画面分ずつに切ったシートフィルムに大別される。→カラーフィルム／感光度
