Born on December 23, 1600. The eldest son of Suwa Yoritada. During the Battle of Sekigahara, he followed Tokugawa Hidetada and participated in the siege of Ueda Castle in Shinano (Nagano Prefecture). In 1603, he returned to his original territory of Shinano Suwa from Soja in Kozuke (Gunma Prefecture), and became the first head of the Suwa clan to rule Takashima Domain. He received a stipend of 27,000 koku, later increasing to 32,000 koku. He died on January 14, 1623. He was commonly known as Kotaro.
