Japanese: 自動飛行制御システム - じどうひこうせいぎょシステム

Also known as AFCS (automatic flight control system). A system that automatically controls the flight and landing of an aircraft. Conventional autopilots are unable to maintain the aircraft's attitude during supersonic flight, so the term "automatic flight control system" has come to be used. In combination with an inertial navigation system (see inertial navigation), there is a trend toward automating everything except takeoff and landing, and automatic landing systems that perform the entire process automatically, including landing, are also in practical use.
