1871‐1910 American microbiologist. Born in Ohio, he studied at the University of Chicago, where he specialized in microbiology and became an assistant professor at the university's School of Medicine. In 1906, he was the first to experimentally prove that Rocky Mountain spotted fever, an endemic disease in the United States, was transmitted by lice. In April 1910, he engaged in research on typhus in Mexico City, and on May 3 of the same year, he became the first victim of laboratory infection by a pathogen.
