Howard Taylor Ricketts

American microbiologist. Born in Ohio, he studied at the University of Chicago, where he specialized in microbiology and became an assistant professor at the university's School of Medicine. In 1906, he was the first to experimentally prove that Rocky Mountain spotted fever, an endemic disease in the United States, was transmitted by lice. In April 1910, he engaged in research on typhus in Mexico City, and on May 3 of the same year, he became the first victim of laboratory infection by a pathogen. The genus Rickettsia, which is intermediate between bacteria and viruses, was named in his honor.

アメリカの微生物学者。オハイオ州に生まれ，シカゴ大学で学び，微生物学を専攻して同大学医学部助教授となる。1906年，アメリカの風土病ロッキー山紅斑熱がシラミによって媒介されることを初めて実験的に証明した。ついで10年4月にはメキシコ市で発疹熱の研究に従事し，同年5月3日，病原体による実験室内感染で最初の犠牲者となった。細菌とウイルスとの中間に位置するリケッチアの属名は，彼の業績をたたえて名づけられたもの。
