One of the three main islands of the United States Virgin Islands. Also known as Santa Cruz Island. It is the largest island in the archipelago, with an area of 217 km2 and a population of 50,139 (1990). It was purchased by Denmark from France in 1733 to form the Danish Virgin Islands, and became a U.S. territory in 1917. It is relatively flat, and in the past sugar cane was cultivated there, as well as rum production and cattle breeding.
