Dutch pastor and author. Born in Amsterdam, he studied in Leiden and became a pastor in 1653. He wrote many books on religion and language, including a book abbreviated as "The Record of the Dutch East India Company's Mission to Japan," published in Amsterdam in 1669 and later translated into English, German, and French. Although the author did not visit Japan, he made extensive reference to reports sent to Europe and published by missionaries in Japan from the mid-16th century onwards, and combined them with the observations of the Dutch mission to Japan to describe the history of Japan-Europe relations over the course of a century, from the overseas development of Europeans, through the Shoho period, and into the early Edo period, and also described various circumstances in Japan in considerable detail. It is clear that many of the illustrations in this book are the product of imagination. The Japanese translation of "Montanus's History of Japan" (1925, translated by Wada Mankichi) is an abridged translation from the English version.
