Born: February 28, 1877. Mortin Manche [Died] August 14, 1961. Seine-et-Oise, L'Israel-Adam French archaeologist. After studying the Bronze Age in the Paris Basin, he became a pioneer in the field of prehistoric art, publishing La Caverne d'Altamira (1906) and La Caverne de Font-de-Gaume (10). He was professor at the Institute of Anthropology and Palaeontology in 1910, professor at the Collège de France from 1929 to 1947, and member of the Academie de France in 1938. He traveled around southern Africa during and for six years after the Second World War, sketching many cave paintings. He also made a major contribution to the chronology of the Paleolithic period. His work Les Subdivisions du Paléolithique Supérieur et leur signification (12) is his greatest achievement in the chronology of European Paleolithic cultures.
