Genital worship

Japanese: 性器崇拝 - せいきすうはい

The worship of images of genitals as having the efficacy of production and reproduction. It is mainly phallic worship, and the shape is enlarged or changed. It is related to agricultural production and is common among agricultural peoples. It is particularly well-known in India, but it was also practiced in Egypt and Greece. In India, it is the linga (phallus) and the yoni (vulva) that is worshipped in conjunction with it. In Japan, it is the object of worship of a roadside god. Phallus images are also used in rice-planting festivals and harvest festivals.

性器の像を生産・繁殖の効験あるものとして崇拝すること。おもに男根崇拝で，その形を拡大・変形する。農業生産と関係し，農耕民族に多い。インドが特に有名であるが，エジプトやギリシアなどでも行われた。インドではリンガlinga（男根）と，それに配して崇拝されるヨニyoni（女陰）。日本では道祖神の神体。また田植祭や豊年祭に男根像を用いる。
