Minuet - Menuet (English spelling) French

A musical term. A type of dance in Western music, originally music for dancing, but later became an independent piece of music without dancing. There are several dozen spellings of this word, and the above is only a representative example. It is an elegant dance in triple time, often combining two minuets, with the first minuet repeated once more at the end. It began to be popular at the court of Louis XIV of France in the mid-17th century, and was favored at courts throughout Europe throughout the 18th century. At the same time, from the mid-18th century, it began to be incorporated as one movement in multi-movement pure instrumental works, and this type of minuet was separated from dance. The second minuet became commonly called a trio because of its compositional characteristics, and the instrumental form minuet-trio-minuet was established. The minuet as a movement became part of the so-called "sonata multi-movement" and was widely used in divertimento, sonatas, chamber music such as trios and quartets, and also in symphonies. In the 19th century, the minuet movement was often replaced by the faster scherzo movement.
