The Iteso are semi-agricultural, semi-pastoral people of the same descent from the Karamojong, who are of Nile-Hamitic (para-Nile) descent. Their population is estimated at about 1.7 million. They are divided into the Northern Teso, who live in central-eastern Uganda, and the Southern Teso, who live in the border area between Uganda and Kenya, south of Mount Elgon. Currently, they focus on agriculture, and are devoted to growing cash crops such as cotton and tobacco. Traditionally, they have no chiefdom, and the age group system was almost completely eliminated during the colonial period. Numerous patrilineal clans have certain taboos, which form the basis of marriage and complex wife incorporation rites. The social unit is a composite family of two generations, and there is no lineage division system. Egalitarian values are the principle of social behavior, and overall integration is weak. The supreme god Edeke has been assimilated with Christianity, but in recent years, under the influence of neighboring tribes, rites for the dead have become popular, and the Southern Teso perform the relocation of ashes about 3 to 20 years after burial.
