…The monastery was dedicated to Saint Laurentius (San Lorenzo) and its official name is the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. In 1563, King Philip II ordered the construction of the monastery to be carried out by Juan Bautista de Toledo (?-1567), who was the second architect of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. After his death, Juan de Herrera (1530-97) took over and completed it in 1585. The monastery has a Greek cross-shaped church with a dome (95m high) in the center, a villa and a monastery on either side, and a mausoleum for the royal family in the basement. …
