A British archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, off the northeast coast of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Located between the Scotia Sea and the Weddell Sea, at approximately 60°35' south latitude and 45°30' west longitude, it is made up of Coronation Island, Rowley Island, and other small islands and reefs, with a total area of 624 km2. Mountainous, closed off by ice and snow, and barren, it is uninhabited except for whaling ships calling at the port and the observation station on Seaney Island. It was discovered in 1821 by a joint fleet of British G. Powell and American N. Palmer, and explored by J. Weddell in 1823, giving it its current name.
