In the case of Commedia dell'arte, the written text was first a summary of the plot and the actors' duties for each scene, posted in the wings of the stage called the canovaccio, which could be called a script, even if it was not a play. However, the actors did not only have this "written text," but also various lines to be used according to the situation (ranging from popular puns in slang to quotations from Plato's "Dialogues").
