A village in Takaoka County, in the mid-west of Kochi Prefecture. Population 2,924 (1995). Located in the headwaters of the Shimanto River, the mountainous region that borders Ehime Prefecture to the north is the Shikoku Karst region, with limestone exposures particularly prominent in the Tengu Plateau area from Niyodo Village in the northeast to Yusuhara Town in the west. The Funato River and Kitagawa River originate from Mt. Irazu (1,336m) in the northeast and flow south. Jomon ruins such as the Funato Ruins and Kitagawa Ruins are scattered within the village. In the Middle Ages, this was the innermost part of the territory of the Tsuno clan, who held sway over the Tsuno-sho area, and the area from this village to Yusuhara Town was called Tsunoyamago.
