The smallest residential group that is mainly composed of kinship ties is called a "family" or a "household." Such smallest residential groups were once called "individual families" or "elementary families," but recently the term "nuclear family," proposed by GP Murdoch, has become more widely used. Here, we will first provide an overview of how the family has been treated as an academic topic, and then discuss the evolution of the concept of family, focusing on the case of Japan, and then discuss the "modern family."
