Rio Grande (River)

Japanese: リオ･グランデ[川]（英語表記）Rio Grande

An international river in North America. It forms the border between the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is 3,030 km long and has a drainage area of 570,000 km2. It originates in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado in the western United States, flows south through New Mexico, and forms the border between the two countries below El Paso in the western tip of Texas, where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. There have been frequent border disputes between the two countries over the change in course of the river, but the dispute was resolved in 1968. It is not navigable except near its mouth, but after World War II, multipurpose dams such as the Falcon Dam (completed in 1954) were built, making it useful for irrigation agriculture.

北アメリカの国際河川。アメリカ合衆国南西部とメキシコとの国境をなす。長さ3030km，流域面積57万km2。合衆国西部，コロラド州南西部のサン･ワン山脈に発し，ニューメキシコ州を南流し，テキサス州西端のエル･パソ以下は両国の国境をなし，メキシコ湾に注ぐ。流路の変更をめぐり両国間に国境争いがしばしば起こったが，1968年には決着をみた。河口付近を除き航行に適さないが，第2次大戦後フォルコン･ダム(1954完成)などの多目的ダム建設により灌漑農業に役だっている。
