An old town in the southern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, Ibusuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. The Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line runs through the town. There is a large area of poor soil (Kora layer) on the volcanic ash plateau, but in recent years this has been removed. The town produces vegetables, tobacco leaves, and flowers, and also cultivates tea and livestock. There are also sake breweries and agricultural product processing factories. In December 2007, it merged with Kawabe Town, Kawabe District, and Chiran Town, Kawabe District, to become a city, forming Minamikyushu City. Area: 110.31 km2 . Population: 14,126 (2005). 鹿児島県揖宿(いぶすき)郡,薩摩半島南部の旧町。指宿(いぶすき)枕崎線が通じる。火山灰台地の不良土壌(コラ層)が広く,近年,その排除が行われた。野菜,葉タバコ,花卉(かき)を産し,茶栽培,畜産も行う。酒造,農産物加工の工場もある。2007年12月川辺郡川辺町,川辺郡知覧町と合併し市制,南九州市となる。110.31km2。1万4126人(2005)。
