...His fame was due entirely to the explosive success of The Adventures of Simplicissimus, and a series of so-called villain novels such as The Wanderer Claesche (1670), The Transformer Springinsfeld (1670), and The Mysterious Bird's Nest (1672-73) were all promoted as sequels to it, and earlier works such as The Satire Pilgrimage (1666-67) and The Virgin Joseph (1667) were also emphasized as being written by the author of Simplicissimus. Grimmelshausen's literary position has traditionally been discussed only within the genealogy of the so-called German culture novel, but it is also necessary to consider his works in comparison with the cultured literary figures such as Philipp von Zesen (1619-89), who dominated the Baroque period, and with the aristocratic type of heroic romance novel. Grimmelshausen also wrote two ideal novels, Dietwald and Amelinde (1670) and Proximus and Limpida (1672), and the fact that the author's real name is used in these novels gives us a glimpse into the hidden side of a wild, realistic, and healthy world of laughter.
