After medieval Catholic church plays and school plays during the Reformation, modern theater began with the founding (1722) of the Danish Drama House by the Frenchman René Magnon de Montaigu (c. 1650-1737) and the appearance of the comedian Holberg. The Danish Drama House was closed in 1727 due to financial difficulties and the royal family's defense of ascetic beliefs, but it was reopened in 1747 and moved to the current site of the Royal Theatre the following year.
