Kiefer, A.

...The United States produced young swimmers such as W. Keloha, W. Laufer, and G. Kojak, but in 1928, at the international competition held at Tamagawa Pool in Tokyo, Toshio Irie won the 200m against world record holder Laufer, beating Laufer by 3m and setting a new world record of 2 minutes 37.8 seconds. Four years later, at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Shoji Kiyokawa, Irie, and Kentaro Kawazu won the 100m backstroke, taking the gold, silver, and bronze medals. However, at the 11th Berlin Olympics, A. Kiefer of the United States won the gold medal and also invented the somersault turn (Kiefer turn), breaking world records one after another. After World War II, the United States showed overwhelming strength at both the London and Helsinki Olympic Games, but at the Melbourne and Rome Olympics, D. Tile and J. Monckton of the emerging Australian team performed well.
