A general term for amphibians in the family Salamandridae in the order Caudata. Newts and geckos are often confused because of their similar names and appearances, but the latter is a type of reptile lizard with sucker-like fingers. There are about 15 genera and 55 species that are widely distributed in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, and most are about 10 to 15 cm in total length and live in water, with two species found in Japan. Newts have a slightly flattened and wide head and a well-developed, laterally compressed tail with a fin-like posterior half, making them skilled swimmers. Their limbs are developed enough to walk slowly on land, and they have thin fingers, four on the front limbs and five on the hind limbs.
