…It was originally one of the seven kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons in the Middle Ages, and ruled an area roughly covering the present-day counties of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, and Avon. The name comes from the West Saxon tribe. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Saxons, who arrived from the continent around 495, founded the kingdom in southern Hampshire in 519. During the first half of the 9th century under King Egbert, it became the center of the seven kingdoms, and during the reign of Alfred the Great (871-899), it prevented the invasion of the Danes and unified England. …

…OE is divided into four dialects according to the area where each tribe settled: (1) Northumbrian, in the north of the Humber River in northern England; (2) Mercian, in the south up to the Thames River (these two dialects are sometimes called Anglian, since they were spoken in the area where the Angles settled); (3) Kentish, in the southeast where the Jutes settled; and (4) West-Saxon, in the area where the Saxons settled.
