1809‐80 Italian politician. Born to a Tuscan noble family, he was a moderate in the Risorgimento. When Tuscany was annexed by the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1859, he played a leading role as the Tuscan Provisional Government's executive officer. After the unification of Italy, he took charge of government after the death of Cavour (1861-62), and as one of the central figures of the so-called historical right, he worked to integrate Rome, Veneto, and other areas into the Kingdom of Italy. He served as Prime Minister again in 1866-67. [Shibano Hitoshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
