Fish sign - Gyofu
〘Noun〙 A fish-shaped tally ticket . A fish shape is made from wood or copper, with characters engraved on it, and then split into two halves so that each person has one half and the two halves together form a complete set. During the Sui and Tang dynasties in China, it is said to have been used as evidence when officials entered and left the palace. → Fish bag. ※Shiseitsutsu (1724), Vol. 5: "During the Tang dynasty, there were various regulations for fish tally tickets" [Suishu - Wendi Ji]
