Current Kanji - Touyou Kanji

This refers to the 1,850 kanji listed in the "List of Kanji for Use," which was issued by Cabinet Order No. 7 and Notification No. 32 of 1946. "Tōyō" means "kanji for use in daily life," and "indicates the range of kanji used in laws, official documents, newspapers, magazines, and the general public." In 1948, the "List of Kanji for Use on-kun," and in 1949, the "List of Kanji for Use in Use in Character Form," were issued, specifying the on-kun and character forms. In 1948, the "Appendix to the List of Kanji for Use in Character Form" was issued, and 881 of the 1,850 characters were designated as "educational kanji." In addition, the "Appendix to the List of Kanji for Names" was issued in 1951, and 92 characters other than the "Tōyō kanji" were recognized as acceptable for use in names. In 1954, the National Language Council issued the "Draft Correction to the List of Kanji for Use (Materials for Correction to Kanji for Use in Character Form)," proposing the replacement of 28 characters. Various arguments were raised against this restriction on kanji. In 1973, the new "List of Kanji for Common Use" was published, and in its appendix, kanji such as "inaka" (countryside) and "okaasan" (mother) were approved. In addition, the "Table of Additional Kanji for Personal Names" was published in 1976, adding 28 characters to the list of kanji for personal names. In 1977, the National Language Council issued the "New Kanji List Tentative Draft" consisting of 1,900 characters to replace the "List of Common Use Kanji," and in 1979, the "Draft List of Common Use Kanji" consisting of 1,945 characters. In March 1981, the "List of Common Use Kanji" was published as a report by the National Language Council. In response to this, the "List of Common Use Kanji" and the "New List of Kanji for Personal Names" were announced in October of the same year.

1946年内閣訓令第7号，同告示第 32号で公布された「当用漢字表」に載っている 1850字の漢字をいう。「当用」とは，日常生活の当座の用に使うものとでもいう意味で，「法令・公用文書・新聞・雑誌および一般社会で，使用する漢字の範囲を示したもの」である。 48年には「当用漢字音訓表」，49年には「当用漢字字体表」が公布されて音訓と字体が定められた。 48年「当用漢字別表」が公布され，1850のうち 881字がいわゆる「教育漢字」とされた。また別に「人名用漢字別表」が 51年に公布され，当用漢字以外でも人名に用いてさしつかえないものとして 92字が認められた。なお，54年に国語審議会が「当用漢字表補正試案 (当用漢字補正資料) 」を出し，28字の入替えを提案。この漢字制限に対し，いろいろの反対論も出された。 73年新たに「当用漢字音訓表」が公布され，同付表で「田舎」 (いなか) ，「お母さん」 (おかあさん) などが認められることになった。なお，人名漢字についても 76年に「人名用漢字追加表」が公布されて 28字が追加になった。また，77年に国語審議会から「当用漢字表」に代るものとして 1900字から成る「新漢字表試案」，79年には 1945字から成る「常用漢字表案」が出され，81年3月には「常用漢字表」が国語審議会答申として公表された。これを受けて同年 10月には「常用漢字表」「新人名用漢字表」が告示された。
