...For example, in ancient Greek theaters, the entire stage was surrounded by seats, except for the back of the stage, and the circular orchestra, which was thought to have been used for chorus performances, was directly in front of the stage and in front of the audience. (The English word "orchestra," derived from this word, refers to the first floor of the auditorium in modern America.) In ancient Rome, there were amphitheatres called amphitheatrums, in which the auditorium was surrounded by tiered seats. The Colosseum in Rome is an example of this.
